HostWelcome to Learning Curve. Today we're talking about learning a language as an adult, and I'm here with language teacher Ana Lopez. Ana, many people believe it's too late to learn a language after thirty. Is that true?
AnaThat's probably the biggest myth I hear. Children are better at getting a perfect accent, that's true. But adults often learn grammar and vocabulary faster, because they can use strategies and they understand how languages work.
HostSo what's the most common mistake adults make?
AnaWaiting until they feel ready to speak. A lot of my students study for months and never open their mouth because they're afraid of making mistakes. But speaking is a skill, like driving. You only get better by doing it.
HostHow much time do you need every day?
AnaLess than people think. Twenty minutes every day is much better than three hours once a week. Regular contact with the language is the key.
HostAnd what do you suggest for those twenty minutes?
AnaMix it up. Listen to something you enjoy, like a podcast or a series. Learn a few words in context, not from long lists. And try to say a few sentences out loud, even to yourself. Some of my students describe what they're doing while they cook.
HostThat sounds fun. Last question: apps or classes?
AnaBoth can work. Apps are great for vocabulary, but you need real conversations to make progress. A teacher can also correct mistakes before they become habits.
