GuideWelcome to Room Four. In front of you is one of the most remarkable objects in our collection: the remains of a merchant ship that sank off the coast of Cornwall in fifteen eighty-eight.
GuideFor over four hundred years, it lay buried under the sand, until a fisherman noticed pieces of wood after a violent storm in two thousand and nine. Divers spent the next six years carefully recording and lifting what was left.
GuideNotice how dark the wood is. That colour isn't paint. It's the result of centuries under water without oxygen, which actually helped to preserve it.
GuideOver two thousand objects were recovered from the wreck, and some of them are displayed in the glass cases on your left. Look closely at the small bronze compass in the centre. Experts believe it was made in Venice, which tells us the ship traded with Mediterranean ports. Next to it you'll see a set of dice and a wooden comb: everyday items that remind us real people lived and worked on board.
GuideInterestingly, no human remains were ever found, so historians think the crew probably survived and reached the shore.
