La storia con il testo
NarratorThere is a peculiar paradox at the heart of modern life: the quieter something is, the more it tends to cost. First-class train carriages are hushed. Expensive restaurants are designed to absorb sound, while cheap ones bounce it off hard surfaces. Noise-cancelling headphones, once a niche gadget for pilots, have become a status symbol. Quiet, it seems, is no longer the default state of the world, but a commodity.
NarratorThis matters more than it might appear. Prolonged exposure to traffic and aircraft noise has been linked by public health bodies to disturbed sleep, raised stress and, over many years, a higher risk of heart disease. And those most exposed are rarely those who can afford to escape: the flats beside the ring road are cheaper for a reason.
NarratorYet silence itself is not an unqualified good. Visitors to the quietest rooms ever built, chambers designed to absorb almost every echo, often find the experience deeply unsettling. Deprived of external sound, they begin to hear their own heartbeat, the movement of their joints, a faint ringing in their ears. Total silence, it turns out, is not peace but a kind of exposure.
NarratorWhat we actually seem to crave is not the absence of sound but the absence of intrusion: the rustle of leaves, the distant sea, sounds that ask nothing of us. Acousticians call them low-information sounds. They occupy the ear without demanding attention.
NarratorPerhaps, then, the case for quiet is really a case for choice: the freedom not to be addressed, sold to or summoned. A city that offered that freedom to everyone, rather than to those who can pay for it, would be a quieter place in the deepest sense.
